Hello

My name is Rowan, and I am in Year 6. I like telling jokes, playing Braille Uno, and I love running cross country with my guide runner; I recently came 5th out of 50 runners. Oh, and I am the reigning champion of the Braille House Literacy Challenge in my category.

My mum and I want to tell you how important Braille House is to me and other kids like me, who are blind or have low vision.

I haven’t decided yet what I want to be when I grow up, but I do know I need my education. Being able to read is a big part of learning and having books in Braille helps me. We are members of the Braille House Library and I enjoy reading comedy and sport books. Did you know that for every 100 books available to a sighted child, there are less than five children’s books created in Braille?

Braille House Library needs more books!  This year, when the Library is celebrating 125 years, we have a goal to add 125 books. We need books with adventure, for education, and to experience the world. The Braille House Library has changed the lives of thousands of children and adults.

For me, Braille House is somewhere that I can learn, be challenged, and talk like crazy to new and old friends. They teach how to read Braille, support our community, and bring families together at events like the Braille House Literary Challenge. It is a place where I feel welcome, and I can be myself.

My mum and I invite you to make a donation to Braille House. Your donation will support a stronger future for children who are blind or have low vision. You will help us know the wonder of reading Harry Potter, the excitement of Aladdin and the pure wisdom of Winnie the Pooh. We need to have the opportunity to read as many books as we can get our hands on!

Your donation can help Braille House produce 125 new books in 2024. I am excited just thinking about all those adventures.

Thank you!

Rowan (and Jill, my mum)

P.S. My favourite book is Horrid Henry by Francesca Simon. I hope you can support Braille House Library to create more books.

Through the power of literacy, Braille provides children and adults who are blind or have low vision with support to gain an education, live independently, increase their opportunities for employment, and engage with their communities.

For young students starting their education journey, having access to books they can read for themselves is critical for developing their literacy skills, which will impact their whole life. Braille gives these children the opportunity to learn alongside their peers.

Braille House’s Mission is ‘to empower people of all ages who are blind or have low vision through alternative formats.’ Braille House volunteers and staff produce books embossed in braille and send them across Australia. They deliver learning, adventure and wonder into the lives of children and adults who were born blind or have lost their sight through an accident or illness.

Braille House Library has been open for 125 years. Volunteers and staff work tirelessly to meet growing demand for Braille resources.

Braille House delivers critical services to Australians who are blind or have low vision. There are 131,000 Australians who have legal, complete blindness – Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW). The ‘Journal of Blindness Innovation and Research’ (2018), found braille literacy is uniquely associated with wellbeing and self-esteem among legally blind adults. Children who learned braille early in childhood reported the highest levels of wellbeing.

We need your support to:

  • deliver Braille learning services to children and adults,
  • produce books in Braille,
  • advocate for the benefits of touch literacy,
  • support the education of children who are blind or have low vision,
  • and so much more.

Rowan said, “My education is important to me and continuous access to new Braille books is a great way to grow my knowledge.”

Tiana said, “I have a special interest in languages – I’m fluent in English, Spanish and Italian and I help students in other countries edit their documents for their classes. I’m currently studying business and psychology and I enjoy singing and playing the piano. I’m also vision impaired so none of this would have been possible without the help of Braille House”.
