White Cane Safety Day is celebrated on October 15.

White Cane Day 2021

The date is set aside to celebrate the achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired and the important symbol of blindness and tool of independence, the white cane.

A white cane is a device used by many people who are blind or vision impaired for orientation and mobility. A white cane primarily allows its user to scan their surroundings for obstacles or orientation marks, but is also helpful for onlookers in identifying the user as blind or visually impaired and taking appropriate care. The latter is the reason for the cane’s white colour, which in many jurisdictions is mandatory.

The White Cane has enhanced the lives of people who are blind or have low vision by allowing them to navigate the world with confidence and independence.

As part of the celebration in QLD, we are inviting people to apply for the Hazel & Louis Sanders Memorial White Cane Users Achievement Awards 2021which acknowledges the significant achievement in their life using the white cane as their primary mobility aide.
